‘There’s no such thing as a free lunch…’ A popular phrase meaning that nothing is really free.
Well, I guess this really does depend how contentious you want to be about it, but to me, I would classify free as something I have obtained at no additional cost. So, on this particular day- I would say that I did get a free lunch, and this is how.
It was one of those days where your not really prepared for lunch, or life in general. You’ve had one of those weekends and find yourself busy the next evening so haven’t had any time to prep Tuesdays’ lunch. This in any normal circumstance would mean one thing, your card is going to have to pick up the slack.
This was pretty much me this week, and when it dawned on me that I had no tub to remove from the fridge to place in my bag for work (which is usually filled with 50% food 50% shoes) I thought, oh crap… I don’t want to have to buy lunch.
It just so happens that I wasn’t particularly hungry this day, so I didn’t need anything crazy, just enough to keep me going. Now, I usually reserve this move for airports, but that’s another story. Today was an emergency situation, so I went in and picked up a chicken mayo sandwich, and charged it to the Boots points. Which just so happens to also be their cheapest, just because points are free, doesn’t mean we waste them, people! Item 1- zero pennies spent.
Item 2 is really part of my Tuesday routine now so this required no thought at all. Now if you are lucky enough to be with O2, maybe you will have noticed Café Nero do a free hot drink after midday with a code. I am not on O2, but my work phone is…so in I went for my Tuesday hot chocolate free of charge- and they even stamp my loyalty card, even though I’ve never spent anything in there!
I would actually consider getting a pay as you go O2 sim for this. If you cash it in every week for a year that’s about £156 of hot drinks for free, even more if they fill up your card in the process.
As for Boots points, one could argue you have to spend to get them. But I only buy things in Boots I need and either can’t get anywhere else or it’s in the sale and its cheaper than anywhere else. I’m not a points fanatic, but if your going to get them for no reason then you may as well bank them.
I triumphantly return to my desk with just enough sustenance to keep me going for the rest of the day, and not a touch of my contactless to show for it. So if on a Tuesday you ever find yourself without food or money, all you really need is your Boots card and your phone.
